Pan Card is a unique 10 digit alphanumeric code issued by the Income tax department of India to every individual applies for it. Any individual can get this issued by fulfilling the application criteria mentioned by the authorities. The document requirement varies for applying Pan card for Indians and non residents but the PAN card issued is the same i.e there is no different types of cards for Indians and for NRIs.

NRIs/PIOs can get a PAN card issued even if they do not require to file income tax in India as there are several other benefits of having a PAN Card especially for those who visit India or like to invest in India. Now the Income tax department of India has made it compulsory for everyone  (including NRIs and PIOs) to have a PAN card to conduct any financial transaction like for making any type of investment in India, purchase or sale of property in India, opening bank account in India, opening demat account in India etc.

Q1 – What All Documents Are Required To Be Submitted Along With The PAN Card Application Form By A Foreign Citizen Located Outside India At The Time Of Application For PAN?

Ans : The following documents are required with the duly filled PAN Card application form by a foreign citizen located abroad

PROOF OF IDENTITY

Copy Of Other National ID Attested By Indian Embassy / Consulate / High Commission / Apostille
Copy Of Person Of Indian Origin (PIO) Card Issued By The Government Of India

Copy of Visa application to Indian authorities an Copy of Visa granted and Copy of appointment letter/contract from Indian Company and Certificate (in original) of Indian address issued by employer (The certificate should be on employer’s letterhead mentioning PAN of the employer. Copy of PAN card for the PAN mentioned in the employer’s certificate should be submitted)

Note: If the applicant has provided an Indian office address, then all the following five documents are mandatory along with any of the first six above mentioned documents:-

  • Copy of Visa application to Indian authorities and
  • Copy of Visa granted and
  • Copy of appointment letter/contract from Indian Company and
  • Certificate (in original) of address in India of applicant issued by authorized
    signatory of employer on employer’s letter head mentioning the PAN of the
    employer.
  • Copy of PAN card for the PAN mentioned in the employer’s certificate.

Lets Have a look at the mandatory fields for filling the online form for applying new pan card

Area Code / AO Type / Range Code / AO Number :- Non Resident should click on the link ‘For International Taxation AO details’ for selecting the AO Type. Select the AO type and submit the page it will automatically populate the Area Code, Range Code And AO number. But if you are not aware about the AO type then you can enter the default AO type for non residents i.e DLC-C-35-1.

Last Name/Surname :-Enter your last name in full as abbreviations are not allowed (In Capital Letters)

First Name :-  Enter your first name in full as abbreviations are not allowed (In Capital Letters)

Middle Name :- Enter your middle name in full. leave blank if not applicable

Name you would like printed on the card :- If your full name i.e First Name + Middle Name + Last Name exceeds 25 characters then use abbreviation of the middle name for this field.

For example If your full name is Venkateshwar Thyagrajan Reddy then you can use Venkateshwar T Reddy

Fathers Name :- Enter your fathers name in full as abbreviations are not allowed (In Capital Letters). Married women also need to give there father’s name and not husband’s name.

Residential Address :-

  • Indian or foreign address can be provided for residential address.
  • Town/City/District, State/Union Territory and PIN are mandatory. If you want to enter foreign address then select “outside India” from the drop down list in the field of “State/Union Territory”.
  • Select name of the country from the drop down and enter the ZIP code as applicable.

Office Address :-

  • Indian or foreign address can be provided for official address
  • Town/City/District, State/Union Territory and PIN are mandatory. If you want to enter foreign address then select “outside India” from the drop down list in the field of “State/Union Territory”.
  • Select name of the country from the drop down and enter the ZIP code as applicable.
  • Office name and address is mandatory in case of Individuals having source of income as salary or business.

Address For Communication :- You can either select residential or official address address for the communication purpose. Which means all further notification will be sent at the address selected by you for the purpose of communication. It is compulsory to enter office address in case of ‘Address of communication’ is office.

Telephone No. :- It is mandatory to enter your contact number with STD/ISD code.

Email ID :- Enter a valid email id to get further notification on your mail id.

Date Of Birth :- Applicant should enter his/her date of birth in DD MM YYYY format.

Payment Details :- If communication address is within India the processing fee for PAN application is Rs 94.00 (Rs 85.00 + 10.3% service tax). Processing fees can be made either by Demand Draft, Cheque, Credit Card, Debit Card or Net Banking.

If the communication address is foreign address, the processing fee for PAN application is Rs 944 [(Application fee Rs 85.00 + Dispatch Charges Rs 771.00) + 10.3% service tax]. Processing fees can be made only by way of Demand Draft payable at Mumbai.

  • Demand draft and cheques should be in favour of ‘NSDL – PAN’.
  • Name of the applicant and the acknowledgment number should be mentioned on the reverse of the demand draft / cheque.
  • Demand draft shall be payable at Mumbai, to be sent to NSDL
  • An additional charge of Rs 5 will be charged from the applicants making credit card / debit card payment.
  • An additional charge of Rs 4 + service tax will be charges from the applicants making payment through Net Banking.

Courier service for dispatch of PAN cards outside India is available for a select list of countries only.
