TRAI : Seek Written Consent From Customers To Activate Value Added Services

Today many customers are facing the problem of default activation of value added services on there mobile phone. So to cater the concern of activation of VAS without the consent of customer, TRAI has come up with new norms. As per the new norms of TRAI, mobile phone service providers have to take written consent from the customers before activating any value added service on there mobile phone.

Caller Tunes, Cricket Updates, GPRS, Horoscope, Games, Ringtones etc. are some popular value added services which customers demand on there mobile phone as per there need. Service providers charge monthly rental for each service you activate on your mobile phone. So now if you need any paid value added service on your mobile phone you have to give written consent to your service provider.

Service providers can take written consent either through email, SMS, Fax or in writing to activate any paid VAS on customers mobile number. The telcos has been asked to follow the new norms by February 2.

To tighten the norms for new mobile connection or the connections which are not in use, TRAI will come up with some new guidelines by march 2013. As currently service providers are arbitrary discontinuing mobile connections which are not in use for more than 2 months. This is affecting a lot of mobile users who were not using there mobile for some time and now when they want to use the same the connection is discontinued by the service provider.

TRAI issued a notification in July 2011 which ordered mobile operators to seek consent from subscribers before activating any value added service on there mobile phone. Operators were supposed to take the confirmation from the customers within 24 hours of the activation of the VAS. Apart from consent from the customer for activation of VAS, service provider had to ask the customer at least 3 days before the date of renewal of VAS. But these guidelines are not been implemented by the service providers which resulted lot of complaints from the customers.
