The concept of Aadhar was introduced in 2009. On the basis of demographic and biometric data, the residents of India can obtain a 12-digit Unique identification number. Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is the statutory authority responsible for collecting this data and issuing Aadhar card.
Aadhar can be considered as a proof of residence but not a proof of citizenship. Even though Aadhar is not meant to replace any of the existing identification proofs such as passport, PAN, and Driving license, it acts as a single identification document. An Aadhar helps the telecom companies, financial institutions, and banks to maintain profiles and make KYC verification. Aadhar is made mandatory for some welfare and non-welfare schemes of the government. Any resident of India can apply for an Aadhar Card with their existing identity proof and address proof such as electricity bill, phone bill and by going through the process of biometric profiling which includes IRIS Scan and fingerprints at any of the Aadhar centres.
