An Employees Provident Fund is overseen and maintained by the Employees Provident Fund Organisation of India (EPFO). It is a retirement benefit offered to salaried employees. As per law, all companies with over 20 employees have to get registered with the EPFO. An EPF enables the salaried employees to save a fraction of their income for unforeseen circumstances, emergency or for retirement. The employer’s contribution to the EPF is tax-free. The money you invest in an EPF, the interest you earn on it and the amount you may withdraw after a lock-in period of 5 years are totally exempt from tax. In a way, EPF is a pension scheme.
